At a citizens\u2019 dialogue titled \u201cWhat Kind of Cox\u2019s Bazar Do We Want\u201d, local entrepreneurs, politicians, lawyers, business leaders, social activists and environmentalists spoke candidly about poor planning, policy gaps and the lack of accountable leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speakers said much of what is happening in the name of development is unplanned. There is no integrated policy framework and no effective accountability, causing the country\u2019s most prominent tourist city to gradually lose its path to sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The citizen dialogue was held on January 24 at the DPHE WASH Conference Hall in Cox\u2019s Bazar town organized jointly by Junior Chamber International (JCI), Cox\u2019s Bazar and Cox\u2019s Bazar Community Alliance, Dhaka (CCAD). But I have not seen any in Cox\u2019s Bazar. If foreign investors come, how will they exchange dollars?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that in reality such services are being informally provided beside hotels, in small shops or even at bus counters. Without proper government oversight, structural improvements are impossible, he said. \u201cThere is no policy here, yet everything is happening in an unplanned way. By the time policies are formulated, everything may already be ruined,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2014&#8211;<br><strong>Absence of Rule of Law, Crisis of Integrity the Core Problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/wpen.thebayinsight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-26-at-8.27.41-PM-1024x548.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wordpress-dzfck.wasmer.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-26-at-8.27.41-PM-1024x548.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/wordpress-dzfck.wasmer.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-26-at-8.27.41-PM-300x160.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/wordpress-dzfck.wasmer.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-26-at-8.27.41-PM-768x411.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/wordpress-dzfck.wasmer.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-26-at-8.27.41-PM-500x267.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/wordpress-dzfck.wasmer.app\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-26-at-8.27.41-PM.jpeg 1066w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior lawyer <strong>Mohammad Jahangir<\/strong> said the core obstacle to solving Cox\u2019s Bazar\u2019s problems is the absence of the rule of law and integrity. \u201cThose who speak loudly into microphones and make laws do not follow the law themselves,\u201d he said, pointing to social double standards such as anti-smoking events attended by smokers and anti-drug programmes led by people reeking of alcohol. \u201cWhen leaders speak against corruption but practice it themselves, why would ordinary people follow the rules?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also questioned the lack of female representation, saying commitments such as ensuring five percent women candidates are not being honoured. He recalled proposing in 2004 that the tourism sector be handed over to local entrepreneurs, a suggestion that was ignored. \u201cNow we see large mega projects being taken over by outsiders. To solve it, Bangladesh must have a stake there,\u201d he said, noting that China and India have expanded their influence in Rakhine since 2017. The salt industry should be removed from BSCIC\u2019s control. BSCIC is not patronizing this sector in any meaningful way. The current stock of salt is enough to last for the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this situation continues, no one will go to the salt fields in the future.
